SaskPower issues RFP for new peaking generation
With a growing demand for power in the province, SaskPower has issued a request-for-proposals (RFP) for new electrical generation.
Following a request-for-qualifications to find private sector partners interested in providing new generation, SaskPower has invited five companies from across Canada to submit proposals for between 100 megawatts (MW) and 200 MW of peaking generation to be in service for the 2011/2012 winter peak. The companies are TransCanada Energy Ltd., ATCO Power Canada Ltd., Northland Power Inc., Epcor Utilities Inc. and SNC-Lavalin Inc.
"As Saskatchewan's economy continues to grow, there is an increased demand for power as people invest in the province and make it their home," Crown Corporations Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. "As part of this process, SaskPower is exploring opportunities for private ownership or investment in new generating facilities."
The deadline for the submission of proposals is April 8, 2009. The successful proponent will be announced in July 2009.
To support the ongoing economic momentum of the province, SaskPower will continue with the development of other supply options. Building on the already-diverse mix in the current generation fleet, future options under consideration include clean coal™, polygeneration, demand-side management, cogeneration, natural gas, imports, nuclear, large and small hydro and renewables—like biomass and wind.
